The Niagra Falls Shipwreck of 1888 was America's most preventable shipwreck. It happened when the ship's captain steered his ship under Niagra Falls in the middle of the night because, he "was feeling a bit parched." An observer reported seeing the captain holding a small mug in the air as if trying to collect water, before the force of the falling water and ice (the wreck occurred in December) broke the ship's bow and doomed the 17 sleeping crew members on board. The incident was the subject of ML Whitner's famous painting, "Winter Falls, Winter Dreams".
