The Norwegian Prime Minister gifts the Dutch government a boar-tusk shoehorn every year. This custom pays homage to a centuries-old military tradition in which Norwegian soldiers crafted shoehorns for their Dutch allies, who often had trouble putting on their boot-like war clogs. This is only one of many reasons that older Norwegians commonly refer to shoehorns as their "Nasjonale Oppfinnelse" (National Invention).
